Hotel in 1929. Photo 618b from Mrs.Palethorpe shows the Western Hotel and flood waters in Cambridge St. in 1929. The living quarters at back of hotel are visible in this picture.
Shows the Hotel in 1934 with the top story verandah forming the awning of the footpath underneath. The building is signed COOKE'S WESTERN HOTEL. Some patrons can be seen seated and standing near the door of the hotel.

About this object
Glossy colour print of a cream painted, double story Western Hotel building. The balcony of the top story forms the awning across the footpath in front of the bottom story. Balcony and roof are supported by posts with decorative capitals. Roof has interesting gables and several chimney pots. Balcony has a picket railing and many doors leading to guest rooms. The lower floor has two doors and a number of sash windows. Several patron's cars are parked in front of the building. At the right hand side of the photo there is a shop window and cantilevered awning of a shop signed 'Mitre 10'.

Subject and Association Description
The Western Hotel was build by Mr. Con Cooke in 1925 probably to replace an older one called the "Shamrock". The Cooke family had a long history in this hotel as it was carried on after his death by his wife Mrs. Allie Cooke (Kelly) and by his stepdaughters Mrs. Kathleen Connors and Mrs. Eileen Duncan and her husband Keith. Both women were Kellys. After Mr. Keith Duncan's death it run for a short time by his niece Mrs. Joanne Pokarier and then by his daughter Mrs. Julie Watson (nee Duncan) who sold it about 2004. It was licensed to Mr. Jim & Mrs. Julie Archibald till 2006 when they sold it to Mr. ? & Mrs. Robyn Turner . It closed in 2009. .

The doorways of the Mitre 10 Mitchell Hardware and Plumbing store are sandbagged but water hasn't reached doors of Western Hotel 20/4/90.
